YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED AND IT'S SEEMS NOT TO BE HAPPENING: HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN (PART B)

By Pastor Kunle Osunkunle

INTRODUCTION

That you have not gotten married as much as you desire it is not because God is punishing you for your past – what you have done or what you haven’t done. Jesus Christ has paid for your past failures and mistakes; so, God doesn’t remember them any longer as long as you are in Christ Jesus.
Here are certain things you need to do in order to make your marriage happen:

         1.     Step into the supernatural.  God wants to re-brand your life; so, don’t live in regret. The wife or husband you get in the supernatural is the best you can ever have and things will fall in place for you.
         2.     Discover your true identity in Christ Jesus. Don’t fall into the “God says” syndrome and don’t let anyone deceive you by making you feel less spiritual.

HOW TO KNOW I AM IN A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP (PART 1)

Message by Pastor Kunle Osunkunle

"GOD TOLD ME"
Sometimes, when people want to go into a relationship, they often go with the notion “God told me” and therefore perceive it to be a right relationship. But, maybe you actually told yourself because you have seen the man or lady so well often times then you feel it must be God bidding you to go into a relationship with him or her. Even when it seems like you have certain things in common and everything seems to match, it is still not a substantial proof to say whether it is a right relationship or not. The mathematics of God usually is not man’s mathematics because a good thing may not be a God-thing. God has a good plan for you; you need to discern it and follow His plan and purpose so that you will live a fulfilled life. Though God is interested in you having a good relationship and building a successful and fruitful marriage; but you must be willing to follow His plans for you.

At times, when you go into a relationship that is right for you, you end up messing it up because you fail to see the wrong things in the relationship. Relationship is not only about enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm
“Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes. People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.” Proverbs 19:2-3 (NLT). Even if you feel enthusiastic about a relationship, if you don’t have the right knowledge and take time to find out to know the quality of the person you want to court you will mess it up. You need to give time to test things. It is a process, so you must have time to test the relationship even though you have enthusiasm. As a result, you need to get wisdom and get understanding. Open your eyes to see if the relationship is good for you or not so that you will have no reason to complain to God. Otherwise you will get hurt.

“Faith comes by hearing…” By this, even if God has told you certain things about the relationship, you need to continue to walk with Him so that He will always speak to you about it. He can open your eyes to all the things you need to know. When people get into a relationship and they don’t seek for knowledge and open their eyes to truth, they get hurt and ruin their lives. Then, they complain to God. Although God might have told you to go into a relationship, but you need to keep listening to Him and hear things He has to say to you about the relationship for it to be successful. That is the pattern of faith.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN ORDER TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP

Laying the foundation courses
1. Lay a good foundation: As written in Isaiah 28:16, you can compare a relationship or marriage with Zion. In Zion good things happen just like whoever finds a wife finds a good thing. Proverbs 18:22. There is a foundation in Zion, in the same way, if you want the goodness and peace in your relationship or marriage you need to lay a good foundation. When you have a foundation it is assumed that you are ready to build and that there will be challenges in the future. If you will go into a relationship, it is assumed that there will be challenges. So, you need to build a foundation. The deeper the foundation the higher the structure you can build.
As single men and women, the single life is a time to build a deep foundation so that you can have a successful relationship. The proper foundation any man can lay in life to have a successful and fulfilled life is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11-13. Jesus Christ is the beginning of any relationship and if your relationship is not built on the word of God it will crash.

2. Use the right building materials: The kind of material you use in build your relationship is very important to the survival and success of your relationship. 1 Corinthians 3:12-13. If you use gold, when fire comes and challenges arise, it will purify it and make it more successful, strengthens it and make it grow instead of destroying it. Therefore, when you build your relationship with the right ingredients, when you pass through fire and challenges it becomes better, stronger and it grows. On the other hand, if you build it with straw, when fire comes on it and challenges arise, it will be destroyed.
When you are in a relationship, rather than sleeping together get to talk and discuss to build a strong and better relationship. If you build your relationship on sex before marriage (pre-marital sex), it is a foundation for disaster in marriage.

3. You need to build according to pattern: There is a pattern for building a right relationship in the word of God. Just as God gave Moses a pattern for the building of the tabernacle, for you to have a successful relationship you must build according to the pattern of God for marriage. Jesus Christ is the Architect; He has given you the plan drawings which are in the Word of God. Jeremiah 29:11. You are the Builder, you need to read and study carefully the Word of God and interpret the design pattern accordingly so that you build in total compliance with the pattern. It is pathetic to know that so many people today are building relationships and marriages that are not in line with the pattern of God. Look at the plan of God for your relationship in the Word of God and translate it appropriately to build your relationship.

4. You must try your foundation: Even if the relationship you are intending for has been given to you by God, you must try it and it takes time to try a relationship. The need for this is to carry out adequate stability test on it to ensure it can withstand pressure and also to know if it has strengths of character. For you to test it, it has to be through time. Give your relationship the test of time. This requires a process.
When you hear people say “God told me”, you need to be careful because every man has the ability to hear four voices – The voice of God, their personal voice, other people’s voices and the voice of the devil. There are people who are going into a relationship (because they had a voice) but they cannot sustain it. They don’t have an inclination of what it is all about.

5. Don’t act hastily: You must not jump into quick conclusion and don’t make a very fast decision. There is a blessing for someone who is patient. When you spend enough time with the person you intended to go into a relationship with (as a friend), you may discover certain things that will help you decide not to go into a relationship with him or her. Whether you like it or not the person you are going to marry is like a Prophet to you. He or she will prophesy either the right or wrong thing to your life, or make you feel less than whom you are or make you feel your real worth and challenge you to greater things. The Word of God instructs us to test every spirit to prove and discover if they proceed from God. 1 John 4:1.
You need to put your intended spouse’s daily actions to test to know whether his or her attitudes are good or not. You must test and prove all things to keep to what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21. Don’t go around setting traps for him. Rather, let him be himself and as he deals with you on a daily basis, you will discover things that you cannot do without, things that he needs to change and things that are like warning signals which indicate if you go on with the relationship and enter marriage, you are heading for trouble.
Let him/her go if need be...
Don’t go into a relationship with the notion that “he or she will change”. You are not the Holy Spirit. He is the only one that can convict and change any man. You must see progress and signs of change before you ever think of proceeding in the relationship to marriage. Don’t just commit yourself to the man or woman, let him or her prove to you he/she is worthy of you. 1 Corinthians 4:2 (AMPLIFIED). Don’t cheapen yourself and think that if you don’t agree to his pressure he will leave. Be resolute on that if he will not stay by accepting your standards let him go before he spoils your life. Only commit yourself to someone who has proven to you faithful.
When you are in a relationship you must talk and talk and talk. Don’t stop talking because that is what the discovery process in a relationship involves. Don’t sleep together. Once you start sleeping together you will stop talking and once you stop talking, the discovery process terminates.

CONSIDER THESE THINGS BEFORE STARTING A RELATIONSHIP

1.       YOU NEED TO KNOW: You need to have the knowledge of things to check out for in the relationship. If you lack this you will not be able to know if the relationship is good or bad. Hosea 4:6. Knowledge is firstly important.

2.       GET YOUR MOTIVES RIGHT: You need to check your motive for the relationship to see if they are right or wrong and be sincere. You must always check motives. People go into relationship for different reasons; for instance, to feel safe, to run away from home, to satisfy parental pressure or peer pressure, to deal with rejection (because he or she needs someone to love and validate him/her), to give love, etc. You must know why you are in the relationship whether to give love or not. We are all products of influence in life. A lady who has suffered rejection will naturally give in to anyone that shows her some interests and perhaps fall for his mischievousness. You must have the capacity to know what is good for you and what is not good for you before you can rightly discern a right relationship.

3.       YOU MUST HAVE THE CAPACITY TO EVALUATE & ASSESS: “To evaluate” means “to put value and worth on something and be able to determine its significance on a particular condition.” Imagine if someone wants to interview you for a position and does not have the knowledge of the position. There are people who are like this; they interview others for a position of husband or wife without knowing who a husband or wife is and their roles. Such cannot conduct a successful interview. If you don’t know what his/her roles are you will not look for them. You need to get knowledge. If you don’t know what is right how can you carefully think about it? 1 Corinthians 15:34. You need to carefully evaluate the person you want to marry so that you don’t have a bad relationship.
No relationship leaves you neutral as in the same way. It is either it makes you better or bitter. Every relationship changes you, it will definitely takes something from you and give you certain things. Think carefully if you are going into a relationship.
If you have someone who is having a feeling of rejection and insecurity, such person is always looking for someone to validate her. Even when she is looking good, she wants someone to validate her look to feel some happiness and adequate.
The challenge is that nobody can give you self-esteem and make you feel really good except yourself. You have to do it by yourself through the help of God by the Holy Spirit.

4.       RELATE AT YOUR LEVEL: As human beings we like to walk and relate at in levels. Usually, we relate with someone who is like us except the person exhibits some things we don’t like. You need to go into relationship with someone who is at the same stand point with you, someone who is attracted to the kind of person you are and have the same ideologies with you. If you go into a relationship with someone who is expecting to receive love just as you are also expecting to receive, you will be disappointed. One of the reasons we have divorce, so much hurts and disappointment in relationships and marriages today is because the expectations of one or both partners are not met. When your needs for the relationship are met. If you don’t know how to give love and validate yourself you cannot give it to another person.

5.       LET LOVE STARTS FROM YOU: When you are disappointed because your needs are not met in a relationship, you get hurts, makes you sick and feels heartbroken. Proverbs 13:12. That is why you need to give love to yourself first rather just expecting to receive it. That is where it starts. How you know things are right in your relationship is by checking from yourself first of all. How much love have you given yourself before you expect someone else to give you love or give love to someone else?
There is nothing like love at first sight, it is lust at first sight. It is true you are attracted to someone at first sight because it is eye-to-body contact communication, yet this is not love because what you see at first sight is the container, you need to find out about the content before you decision reasonably on whether to love the person or not.
When you are in a relationship and things don’t work out, it doesn’t mean you are a bad person. It is simply that you are not compatible. You are not looking for someone who is perfect, but someone who you are perfect for you.

Remember that, when you are in a relationship, ensure that you prove all things and lay a solid foundation. To know whether you are in a right relationship or not, first of all you need to find out from your point of view whether you know things that are right. It is important to start from yourself.

TRUST (Part 2)

Pastor Kunle Osunkunle

Text: Psalms 125:1 (MSG)

From the above Bible text, we can see an illustration that God is consistent in His character in all situations. It is difficult and almost impossible for a marriage to grow and be successful without trust.
Answer this question???
Trust is a risk so much that you become vulnerable when you trust someone. A man that has not met God will be difficult to trust. Ordinarily, it is difficult to trust any man. When you are looking for someone to trust and marry, look for someone who has put His heart in God’s hands. You can trust someone who is spiritually minded; someone who is fulfilling the qualities of love which are written in 1 Corinthians 13. But never trust someone who is carnally minded; someone whose thoughts always center on carnality.
Relationship starts from the internal and not from the external. Don’t work from outside-in as most people always want to do. There are some people you think you know but in reality you don’t know them. So, you need God to reveal their inner minds to you in order to know them. The heart of man is very important when it comes to the issue of trust. Therefore during courtship, evaluate, discover and find out if his or her mind is stayed on God.
Someone who wants to please you at the expense of pleasing God cannot be trusted.
Another definition of trust is, it is firm reliance on the integrity, ability or character of a person or thing. You need to discover if the person has the capacity to be trusted and fulfill the marriage vow before you go to the altar.
Therefore, courtship is a period to discover his or her capacity for trustworthiness with the Holy Spirit being your partner. There are some things that your senses, intellect or emotions will miss. Such, your spirit should never miss.
When you say you trust someone, it implies you rely on the ability of the person to stand by his or her words. Trust doesn’t come with the commitment of relationship. It has to be built, strengthened and maintained daily by constant actions. You need to be consistent in your characters and integrity.
It takes time for trust to be built and it takes a long time to build it; while it takes just a short time to destroy it.

HOW DO WE DEVELOP TRUST

Galatians 5:6

Put your trust in God first...
1.       HAVE FAITH IN GOD: - We believe in God simply because we trust Him. The reason we trust Him is because we know He can never fail. And the reason we know He can never fail us is because He loves us. So, faith is as a result of love. Little children trust their parents explicitly because they know they love them. Just as faith works by love, trust also works by love. Without the love for God in your heart, Satan has in-route into your heart. This kind of love is God’s unconditional love. This kind of love develops trust. The person you show this kind of love (with the qualities in 1 Corinthians 13) will trust you. Note that, your partner will feel accepted and not rejected when you show this kind of love to him or her.
2.       COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY: - If you love someone, when you are together and you feel sexually aroused, you should express yourself and once you share your feelings; your partner will feel accepted and not rejected.
Communication helps trust. You should be able to communicate effectively when your actions change. Before you get marriage, trust should be established that is while you need time. If you give trust to someone who doesn’t deserve, you give him or her license to destroy you. If you want to get married, make sure you totally trust your partner.
When it comes to trust it has to be total. Just as total faith is required to receive anything from God; total trust is needed for a successful relationship.
When your trust is not total in a relationship you are double-minded. When you are double-minded you are wavering; when you are wavering you will not be able to get certain things you are supposed to acquire in the relationship.
You may be deceived if you trust too much; but you will live in torment if you don’t trust enough. If you don’t trust enough your love is not total and fear will set in and then result to torment and severe agony. The devil introduces fear once you don’t trust enough.
When you fail to totally trust your partner fear sets in. Once fear sets in, it leads to doubt and eventual accusation.
Trust is a responsibility. When you say you trust God, it means you put a responsibility on God that He is will do all He has said. Likewise, when someone trusts you, it is a responsibility that you will be faithful in your commitments to him or her. The vows you made on your wedding day, the promises you made to your husband or wife, the trust your children had in you in providing for their different needs are all examples of the responsibilities trust suggest to us.
Trust grows in an environment of love. When there is total trust there is safety and security. Psalms 62:8. When you trust there is fulfillment. Proverbs 31:10-27. Trust ensures that one is not hindered in a relationship and ensures that you fulfill your full potentials as no one is intimidated or suspicious. If you want fulfillment ensure there is trust in your relationship.

RESULTS OF LACK OF TRUST

1.       FEAR
2.       DOUBT
3.       ACCUSATION
4.       ANXIETY
5.       SUSPICION - You will be unnecessarily spying on your spouse. The attention and love will be viewed with suspicion. Everything he or she does will have a sense of strings attached.
6.       DESTRUCTIVE ARGUMENT – Since you are always arguing, little time will be spent in building the relationship.
7.       LOW SELF-ESTEEM - It diminishes people’s self-esteem. For someone who has been betrayed before, ordinarily, your defense is always high up. And probably as you go around not trusting people and if a good partner comes your way you may lose him or her.
Consider that the case of Jesus Christ, though He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, He did not use him to judge and define the whole of humanity or stop from fulfilling His purpose. But rather empower the Church. Sometimes, you need to forgive, heal and move on in life. There are good and godly people that can be trusted.
In developing trust you must do the following:
1.       You must trust yourself. Work on yourself first. Proverbs 22:18. Don’t go out looking firstly for someone to trust. Rather, first of all consider if you can be trusted by someone else. Before you look for a good thing, ask yourself if you are a good thing. Before you point accusing fingers to someone, ask yourself if you can be trusted.
2.       Trust is earned and as you grow daily in it. Ensure you are always sincere and truthful. Don’t lie either deliberately or by omission.
3.       Do things daily to reinforce your trust in someone. Do not be excessive in your actions or attitudes towards someone.
4.       Always work on your communication skill to ensure effectiveness. Don’t give out intentions or say what you don’t mean. Always talk about your feelings every time. An abusive relationship is the one where you cannot talk about how you feel at any time. You must be able to talk and talk and bring how you feel about everything. Trustworthy people talk about everything.
5.       Avoid keeping secrets that is having emotional tone on you. To keep secret demands a lot of energy. Sin thrives in secrecy. If there is no love that will ensure trust is generated and developed in a relationship, there will be no protection of the lives involved.
6.       Don’t try to meet someone else’ needs in order to meet yours. Openly communicate to know what his or her needs are.
7.       Also, praying together will help develop trust. Though sex bond couples; but couples that pray more together talk much more and enjoy one another more. They also enjoy sex more. You need to ensure you always pray together.
8.       Make sure you resolve issues quickly. Don’t go to sleep on the same bed without resolving issues. Some people deny their spouses having sex or eating in the house because they are angry or they were wronged. Then, fear, doubt, accusation and insecurity set in. When there are issues, sit down and solve them otherwise the devil will build on them.
9.       Keep trusting in God so that you will not keep relying on suspicion. When you start to talk to God, He will start to reveal you certain things about Him. Keep the channel open to God. Don’t be anxious.
Karl S. Elvry says, “Trust enables you to put your deepest feelings and cares in the palms of your partner‘s hands knowing they will be handled with care.” Ensure that he or she is in God’s hands and that his or her heart is committed to God. Then you can commit your heart to him or her. God is the beginning and end of trust. A man or woman that has committed his heart to God can be trusted.
May the Lord help you.

TRUST (PART 1)

Pastor Kunle Osunkunle
(President, The Singles Fellowship, The Fountain of Life Church)

Text: Psalms 125:1 (MSG)

Mount Zion is a mountain that is immovable. Regardless the circumstance, situation or challenge, it always remains. Those who put their trust in God are like this Mount Zion. In spite of the storms of life, they cannot be moved. So, at every point in time, we can trust in God because we know His character that He can never fail.
The truth is, when you trust God based on His word that He cannot change and He can never let you down; then you will see Him do exactly what He says He will do.
TRUST
When you go into a marital relationship or get married to someone, you probably expect that you should trust one another.  When you take the marriage vow, you say that it’s for better or worse; it simply implies that you are looking onto your spouse alone and that you will no longer focus on any other man or woman. So, you are not expecting infidelity from him or her.
There is no one that wants to marry someone who he or she cannot trust. The next closest relationship you will ever get to after your relation with God is the marriage relationship. As it is that you go into a covenant relationship with God at the time of salvation, the same way you establish a covenant relationship with your spouse when you marry him or her. And it is almost impossible to go into a covenant with someone you don’t trust.
Trust is a fundamental ingredient of any human relationship.  When you don’t trust your intended partner, there are certain issues that will ensue which will become suggestions towards distrust in your relationship. There are things you do while dating or in courtship with your intended partner that may result into distrust in marriage. For instance, premarital sex is a recipe for distrust in later years.
Trust is one of the most important ingredients for a successful relationship. It is like salt; it gives your relationship the needed seasoning. Without trust it is almost impossible for a marriage to work. Don’t marry someone you trust 99.9% because the devil can work or wreck havoc with just 0.1%. Once he begins to work with 0.1% it becomes magnified. When you trust someone, you feel safe, feel connected and get closer. The closer you get to someone, the more trust you expect from him or her.
When you give trust to someone who doesn’t deserve it you actually give him or her power to destroy you. When you give your commitment to marry someone, you expect to feel safe with him or her. When you are in a relationship, you need to find out if you can trust your intended spouse or not. That is why courtship is a time for interview, to evaluate with focus and not a time for intercourse. When you start to sleep with the person, the discovery process stops. You don’t know whether you can trust him or her any more.
Many people are heart-broken because they didn’t discover if their intended spouse can be trusted before they gave out their heart to him or her. Before you give your heart to someone else, prove him trustworthy because your heart is very delicate. You cannot afford to give it to unproven person.
Trust is not what you get it is earned. Test all spirit. By the things he or she says, acts or think you can know whether he or she can be trusted. Trust is a living entity, breathing constantly in order for a relationship to survive. Trust has to be something you invest in on a daily basis.

WHAT IS TRUST?
1. Trust is putting confidence in someone that he or she will be honest to you at all times; being faithful, being loyal, being sincere and being dependable hoping that he or she will always tell you the truth (even in little things). This will result when you can be truthful to one another at all times. Someone who is truthful about his or her feelings when you are together can be trusted.  When you see someone who is truthful to himself or herself can be trusted. It implies that such can be loyal, faithful, constant and dependable at all times.
2. If someone can gossip about other people to you, he or she can gossip to others about you. Someone who is committed to his or her words can be trusted. Can he or she keep his or her promises? Someone who cannot keep his or her promises before marriage cannot keep marriage promises because marriage has gotten so many promises. Marriage is not only about the good times. Will he or she stay when bad times come? If you are in a relationship and you don’t have peace, you have to check it again.
3. Trust is not an emotion that you should give to someone based on what or how you feel. Emotions are not stable and you cannot base your decisions on what is unstable. No one gives trust, it must be earned. 1 Corinthians 4:2. For anyone to be trusted, he or she must prove himself or herself and earn it.
The way we have defined trust as putting confidence, being faithful, being loyal being dependable, you need to ask yourself sincerely; do you think someone is capable of doing all these all the time? Human nature is not capable, that is why we need to understand our limitations. Jeremiah 17:7. In your own strength, you cannot trust someone. Psalms 118:8; Micah 7:5 (NLT); John 2:23-25.
Marriage is committing your heart into another person’s hands. So, don’t give your heart to someone who has not earned your trust otherwise, you can be heart-broken.  There are some people who have died as a result of emotional break-down while some ran mad because they committed their lives into people’s hand that they don’t trust.
There are two reasons why you don’t trust people, namely:
1.       Because you know them. There are some people you know based on your experiences with them that they are not trustworthy. So, experience is important when it comes to the issue of trust. The reason for experience is because of the environment has a way it affects us. Where we grow up has a way of affecting us and determines how we trust people. Likewise, the way we have seen life affects whether we trust or not. There are certain people who have bad past and serious past hurts that have concluded that certain gender cannot be trusted or things should be hidden from certain gender.
2.       Because you don’t know them. Someone you are meeting for the first time is a stranger and you don’t know the person. So, it takes time to discover if someone is trustworthy or not.
Trust is a risk that makes you vulnerable because you put your heart in the hands of someone else. But, there is a wise way you can take the risk. We go through certain things in life that will make us ordinarily not to trust people.

HOW TO TRUST PEOPLE

1.    THROUGH THE WORD OF GOD: - To trust someone, you need to study the word of God diligently. Start to view or see people through the word of God. Some people have had bad experiences that only the word of God can heal them. Colossians 2:8. Regardless the terrible things you have gone through in life, you need to start to renew your life with the word of God. When you come to Christ, there is healing – intellectual, emotional and spiritual healing. The more you read the word of God, the more you see things in the proper perspective.

2.       INVESTIGATE INTO HIS/HER HEART: - The way your intended spouse’s heart is, that is the way he or she will treat your heart. What you don’t have you cannot give. If his or her heart is corrupt, he or she will corrupt yours. It is difficult to trust another man. So, when it comes to the issue of trust, the heart is to be considered. When you need to know whether to trust someone, investigate his or her heart. Remember, courtship is a time to interview and discover your intended spouse through thorough evaluations. Once you start to sleep together, you stop the discovery process and in the future you cannot trust the person.

3.        LOOK FOR GOD IN PEOPLE: - There is no one who is capable of being trustworthy. No one can be really trusted. But, a man or woman who commits to God is the one who can be trusted. Deep calls unto deep while shallowness calls unto shallowness. You can only marry at your level. When you take the decision to marry someone. It is based on the level of your spirituality at the time. Look for someone who is very devoted and committed to God. Devotion comes before duty. The man or woman who trusts God is the same who can be trusted. Even in marriage, there should be a constant devotion to God in the study of the word and prayers. The issue of mind renewal is constant. So, don’t take it for granted if your spouse stops reading the Bible. When you are dating, how does he or she handle the things of God? The way your spouse views or sees the things of God will determine how he or she will relate to you. If he or she doesn’t take the things of God serious, he or she may disappoint you.

4.       DOES HE OR SHE LOVES GOD: - Faith works by love. Galatians 6:5. So, you need to ask whether he or she love God. The person that loves God can be trusted. The person who loves God will abstain from sin and will never cut corners.

The Lord will help you and cause your life to glorify Him in Jesus’ name.

HANDLING PRIDE IN A RELATIONSHIP

Message by Pastor Kunle Osunkunle
(President, The Singles Fellowship, The Fountain of Life Church)

One of the most important vices that must be overcome in order to have a fruitful and successful relationship is PRIDE. Many people have made a mess of their lives and relationships due to pride.
When a known Christian falls into a sin of fornication and carelessly gets pregnant, it is often due to pride, at times, when he/she get puffed up with the knowledge you think you have about relationship
Even married couples need to deal with it too because it is very destructive. Lucifer was sent out of heaven because of it. Ezekiel 28. There are know and unknown things in our lives that often give elevated opinions about ourselves. We need to watch out. There are so many people who have lost their gifts because of pride.
There is always something in your life that you look at that causes you to be prideful and therefore based on that you become prideful to others and elevate yourself unusually. There is nothing we have that we didn’t receive. Why do you boast as if you were self-made? There is no self-made man; you should realize that all glory must return to God.
Pride is deeply in the heart of every man and this makes us to tend to discuss and compare ourselves with others when we meet. It is part of human nature to compare oneself with others. So, you need to deal with it.

DEFINITIONS

1.      Pride always have resultant effects and causes you to sin. Pride leads to anger, anger leads to malice, malice leads to hatred and hatred leads to others sins. This is how pride progresses on in sin. It was through pride that the Devil became the devil. Every time you are prideful, you become an opponent of God.
2.      Pride is simply thinking you are better than somebody else. It reflects in a relationship when your partner is not willing to hear your opinions on a matter, thereby making you feel like a moron. It is a deceiving spirit that makes you feel you are always right and makes you despise spiritual instructions and advices. It will hinder you from seeking for useful counsels and advices because you think you know. You always want endorsement. It results into failure at all times.
3.      Pride is the absence of humility and teachable spirit. Prideful people also boast that they don’t change their minds. It is self worship or idolatry as such that you believe you are your own god.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH PRIDE?

1.      Pride changes your way of thinking from best to worst. You think only about yourself where you feel your opinions, feelings and emotions are superior at all times. As such, you will always hurt others and never say “I am sorry” when you are wrong.
2.      Pride makes you prone to mistakes and errors. Proverbs 11:2. Prideful people always miss out useful information needed to make best decisions because they feel they know. Therefore, they will always make serious mistakes and errors. Not accepting possible mistakes committed is a sign of pride. With mistakes come shame and destruction. Pride steals your identity. Prideful people always want the spot light to be on them and are usually selfish. He/she wants the partner to always be centre of attraction and become intimidated if otherwise. Then, tries to manipulate him or her as to dominate.
3.      Pride is the source of contention and friction or conflict in a relationship. Proverbs 13:10. There is nothing as honourable as learning to say “sorry”. A lot of people seek after who is right rather than what is right. Men have a lot of ego; therefore, women have to learn submission. To do this, you have to be filled with the Holy Spirit and always speak in tongues so as to be able to always speak right and use helpful words.
4.      Pride makes you blind to your fault, disregard other people’s views and disrespect them. It makes you non-progressive and obstinate. Any thing that the Spirit can’t change in you makes you prideful.

WHY IS PRIDE TO BE DEALT WITH?

        1.      It is a sin. Proverbs 21:4 (MSG). Any prideful man is distinguished by wickedness.
        2.      It will be punished and judged by God. Proverbs 16:5 (NLT).
        3.      God hates pride. Proverbs 6:16. God resists the proud people and makes it makes you become          God’s opponent. James 4:6.
        4.      It is a route to destruction. Proverbs 16:18.
        5.      It takes you far from God. Psalms 10:4. When you are in a relationship and you are prideful, God stays far away from you.
        6.      It makes you a fool.
        7.      It is a recipe for disgrace and shame. Daniel 5:20 (NKJV). When you get into pride, your heart and spirit get hardened. That is when you become obstinate.
        8.      It short-circuits your life and relationships. Ecclesiastes 7:8.

HOW TO HANDLE PRIDE

1 Corinthians 13:4; Ephesians 4:2

1.    Walk in love and be patient with people:  People will make mistakes because they are not up to your standard, so be very patient with them. You should know and understand that there are people that are better and richer than you. God is so generous that He makes all things go. That is why charm is deceitful and beauty fades away or disappears with time.

2.    Always be humble and gentle:         It is impossible to be humble without being gentle. How you want to be treated, treat others. Humility pleases God. In life, because we all have different views and dealings, it is not wrong to have a different opinions and thoughts. You agree to disagree. So, you should also disagree to agree. With humility comes honour. Every time you want to have your way, check your spiritual antenna because it takes the Spirit to be humble and gentle.
Marriage is like a service; if you should compete, compete on who to serve most not otherwise. The best way you enjoy sex in marriage is to have the attitude of servicehood, a situation where you always seek to give desirable pleasure and satisfaction to your partner.
It takes humility to learn and carry out servicehood. That you are a jovial person doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have boundaries. You should draw and define boundaries. Every relationship should have a boundary.

May the Lord help you with His Spirit and strengthen your faith in Him. Amen.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LOVE AND INFATUATION (PART 1)

Message by Pastor Kunle Osunkunle
(President, The Singles Fellowship, The Fountain of Life Church)

How come Samson did not discern Delilah? The story of Samson talked about him going somewhere, seeing a girl and telling his parents he wants to marry the girl. He really didn’t know anything about the girl, but he just wanted to marry the girl.
How come Jonathan was able to discern David, even though he was his father’s arch enemy? This implies that there are some things that don’t look or seem like it, but if you probe a little deeper, you would see it clearly.
When God looks at a man, He doesn’t just look at the outside, He looks not on a man alone, but He looks through him. We also need to come to a place where we can look through people, and that only happens when your spirit is sharp. When your spirit is sharp you can discern them. You make your decisions and your decisions make you.
The Bible defines discernment to mean; to stand, to consider, to investigate, to examine, to scrutinize and to ask questions.
Discernment is defined as to detect, to perceive with the eyes of the mind and to perceive the distinctions. Therefore there is a need to discern, detect (that is, pay attention) and to be observant when you are making a decision especially in relationships.
You will need to discern, define and think about things deeply in order to righly decide based on what the Bible says; not based on reasoning, but  based on what the Spirit of God says.
The things that enhance your discernment are the acquisition of knowledge and the capacity to feed on the word of God.
In life, wanting to love or be loved is normal. In actual fact, this is further reinforced by the books, magazines, movies, etc we have read and watched; and based on these we have started to build our fantasies on the man or woman we want to marry.
Some people have magazine husbands and wives. While some already have the picture of the man or woman they desire, failing to realize that those pictures have been made to look perfect using  computer picture editing programmes like ‘Adobe Photoshop’ and now are waiting to marry ‘Photo shopped’ men or women.
Of course when someone you feel is attractive or someone that somewhat fit the portriat notices you, you begin to feel good. This is simply fantasy that you assume has met reality.
It is perfectly normal for you to be attracted to somebody or for someone to be attracted to you. At the point when your heart is pounding, your knees are wobbling that it seems you have butterflies in your stomach because someone is attracted to you; the challenge comes when you define these ‘pleasant’ feelings to love.
Some people have said that love is like a fire, it just consumes you. People then run into problems and chaos because they make quick and permanent decisions based on just these feelings without given enough time, effort and commitment to prove it to be love.
The only reason you keep a vow or promise with someone is if you’ve given time, effort or commitment into that relationship.
Most people are quick to say ‘I love you’ because they are quickly blinded by uncontrolled feelings or emotions.  You just met a girl in two weeks, and you look at her lovely eyes and become dumbfounded, the next thing you say is ‘I love you’ and often times, the lady too will reply, ‘Oh, that’s the sweetest thing I’ve heard’. But once that feeling is gone, if you have not developed and built a relationship, if we have not learnt friendship, you are left with nothing. That’s the reason a number of people keep falling in and out of love. This result also to serial relationships, simply because we make quick and permanent decisions, based on the feelings we have at that moment.
This is a classic case of infatuation. Love is not as quick as that, it doesn’t come or go suddenly. It isn’t love at first sight; it is attraction at first sight that takes it slow and gradual. It is a process, a process of discovery and getting knowledge.
True love is like a cornerstone. It has even be tried and tested. Also, like a sure foundation, it has to be tested all over again. Isaiah 28:16
Yes, you are sure. Most of us see someone and we say the Holy Spirit has told us; whereas, it is your eyes, your ears that have told you. You feel it is fantasy meeting reality. You need to slow down and really learn the love process. I’m not saying attraction is not good; of a truth, when you meet someone irresistible (pretty or handsome), something attracts you to him or her. That is simply attraction and not love. Therefore, you shouldn’t take attraction for love. Love is more than just an attraction. Haste always makes mistakes. Proverbs 19:2 (NLT). You need to increase your discerning capability. And you need knowledge to enhance this. Proverbs 19:2 (The Message).
A lot of people today are falling into sins including fornicating, because they have been hastily misrepresented love and defines it to be infatuation.
Pastor Bimbo Odukoya said in her book, 165 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE MARRIAGE, that the inability to differentiate between love and infatuation exposes one to the danger of making a costly mistake when choosing a life partner. So you need to be able to discern and differentiate if what you feel is really love or infatuation.

THE WORD OF GOD

When you pay attention to instruction and to the word of God, you will show discernment and your lips will express what you’ve learnt. If you have learnt the right things, your lips will express them in your discussions with others -”For the lips of an immoral woman as sweet as honey and her mouth smoother than oil, but in the end, she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a double edged sword, her feet go down to death and her steps lead to the grave”. Proverbs 5:1-5 (NLT).

There are so many things in a relationship that when you are began it with infatuation and not true love, you will like them. They are somewhat enjoyable. You like what you are hear and what you feel. These things are supposed to go through a process. They have to be tested so that in the end you don’t end up being consumed. Most people are being consumed and are making mistakes because they are not discerning and patient enough to go through the process.

WHAT IS INFATUATION?

The dictionary meaning (Webster’s collegiate dictionary) says, ‘To make foolish, to affect with folly, deprive of sound judgment’. It also means to inspire with a foolish and extravagant passion. This implies that infatuation will deprive you of sound judgment, that is, you won’t be able to think right when you need to detect, distinguish and think through. If you are infatuated how you can think through? You will surely start to act foolishly.
WordNet online dictionary says, ‘It is a foolish and extravagant passion, temporary love and object of extravagant short lived passion’. Just like lightning, it comes and goes. Infatuation is an emotional response based on fantasy.
You have had a fantasy of a particular guy or lady and some day that fantasy just passes by, your fantasy has come through and you have an emotional response to it. Emotions are ‘e-motions’ always changing. You can’t make a decision based on emotions.
So, where do these feelings come from? Is it the devil? No. God put those feelings in you. Feelings are not bad in itself, it is how you use them. Failure to understand the purpose of a thing means that it would be abused, so God put those feelings there to be initiators not deciders of love.
Some people have walked so much in lust that they chase anything in skirts, usually it is when your fantasy comes around you that you are supposed to notice. So it is supposed to be an initiator and not a decider.
Note again that, attraction in itself is not bad, it is what you do with it that determines if you will fall into sin or not. Biological science has proven that emotions or feelings are caused by a chemical reaction in the body. This releases some hormones into the brain.
How does infatuation start?
Usually when you have fantasies and dreams gotten or formed by some magazines, Hollywood movies and not the word of God, what usually happen is that you will begin to concentrate only on what you have seen and heard.

PROCESSES OF LOVE

  1. EYE TO BODY CONTACT: It often starts in form of eye to body contact. Something registers your interest there and you start to think about your life together with that person, that is, fantasize.
  2. EYE TO EYE CONTACT: If you keep on for so long, eye to eye contact results. This is when two people look at each other, eye just meets eye for a second and you take it off immediately. Then wait for about two seconds to see if the person is still looking or not and because both of you are thinking the same way, your eyes meet again. Some people stop there and start to dream and fantasize and end up dreaming about so and so. It is not God telling you anything, your thoughts are. Some others say this lady is disturbing me in my dreams. It is not the lady, but your fantasies. Take a step, walk up to her and say hello. It doesn’t mean anything would happen. When people are infatuated usually they take one quality and celebrate it, usually physical appearance. However, when they start to see the flaws and weaknesses they walk away.
  3. VOICE TO VOICE CONTACT: The next is voice-voice contact. That is where you kick off a discussion, you start to feel good talking to a person and the feelings make you happy and happiness isn’t a sin. Conversations continue, phone numbers are exchanged and you begin to talk. When you are talking, you need to ensure that you are really talking on the things that matter – relevant issues of life. The quality of what you discuss at this point is very important. It can take the relationship to the next level or deter it and end there.
In such a relationship, the first six months are the “HONEYMOON STAGE” where nothing he/she does is wrong until you enter the “REALITY STAGE”. Don’t take any lasting decisions during the honeymoon stage. Most people take lasting decisions during that stage which is usually detrimental
Also, when you are talking, your hands can possibly touch each other just for a little. When that happens, something in you changes, infatuation eventually would turn physical. Before you know it, if you are not careful, one day both of you will be looking into each other’s eyes when you are alone and results to kissing. Both of you must have been thinking about kissing at one point or the other, until the situation presents itself. As you go further, infatuation eventually becomes physical. AND IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL SEX IS AT YOUR DOORSTEP.
Most people especially Christians don’t plan to have sex when in a relationship, but there are things that get you up to that position/point where the only thing that seems reasonable to do is to have sex. Therefore, you need to understand your body chemistry/make up and that the way God has made us is that, when you are in a relationship, our physical and emotional self merge.
When you mistakenly cross over to sex, your discussions and bonding stop; because you have gone to “non-verbal bonding” which means problems you are supposed to be solving and quality discussions you are to have stop totally. You do everything with sex - solve problems with sex, fight with sex. Most times, it ends in a break-up. But, if eventually both get married to each other, then at some point you begin to think he/she has changed. He/she didn’t change, what has happened is that you didn’t find out, you were infatuated and you short-circuited the process of love.
This is the main reason that God has told us not to have sex before marriage because it hinders good communication, discussions and discernment.

MORE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LOVE AND INFATUATION

1 Corinthians 13:4-8; 1 John 4:7-8.

1.  Love takes God into all its plans. It is the essence of God, so if you say you love a person, you take God into consideration for everything you do for that person. The problem with most of us is that if you have not experienced love you cannot know what you are looking for. If your heart hasn’t experienced the love of God, you cannot know what you are looking for. You will only look based on your misconceptions and assumptions about love.
The state of your heart is important. If you have the knowledge of God, you will compel your feelings and thoughts with it. When you’ve acquired knowledge, you will be able to detect, define and logically discriminate when necessary.

2.  Love has a priority to maintain a closer work with God. Its desire is to please God above pleasing a man or a woman (mortars). The more you walk with God, the more you walk in love. Then God will begin to reveal Himself to you the more. As this happens, love grows more in your heart.
Unlike love, infatuation wants to please the person rather than please God. Infatuation is selfish, while love isn’t. Love doesn’t want to take from you, it wants to protect you. Infatuation wants to take from you and doesn’t want to give back. Love takes time to grow, while infatuation is fast and always in haste. It comes like a speeding bullet and like a bomb. It makes a distraction, and then it is gone. It comes suddenly and sometimes without warning.
Remember the Bible says that love is patient. It is willing to start small and willing to grow. Infatuation is like a weed.
In conclusion, you really need to slow down, get to know the person, because love is a process, and learn through thick and thin. See him/her in various seasons through the years, how he/she behaves in various situations before you make your decisions. The knowledge you’ve acquired when you begin to define, detect and logically discriminate will help you make right and godly decisions.
I pray that you will make the right decisions in Jesus’ name.
